ISTR and TrustAfrica issue Call for Contributions

In July 7-10, 2010, the International Society for Third Sector Research (ISTR) will hold its 9th International Conference at the Kadir Has University in Istanbul, Turkey under the theme Facing Crises: Challenges and Opportunities Confronting the Third Sector and Civil Society. Together with ISTR and other African institutions and researchers, TrustAfrica intends hosting a full day meeting on the theme Democracy and Governance in Africa: (Dis) Enabling the Public Sphere. In addition, a panel on the topic will be proposed for the ISTR conference itself. Authors of accepted papers will be assisted to attend both events. This is a joint call for abstracts that, from a civil society perspective, addresses the question of democracy and governance in Africa, yesterday, today and tomorrow.

 

 Abstracts are invited that address the democracy-governance theme. Other themes that can be addressed include:

  •  The relationship between aided and un-aided civil society and the public sphere.
  • Civil society and NGO-specific laws in Africa and the contestation of the public sphere.
  • States, citizenship and the public sphere in Africa.
  • The African Diaspora and the Public sphere.
  • Regional Economic Communities, the Africa Union and sites for the contestation of the public sphere.

Abstract Submissions
Abstracts are invited in English and French. To be considered for review and acceptance, an abstract must meet the standards as set out in the ISTR Call for Contributions. The abstract must indicate significant academic theoretical and empirical rigor and creativity by meeting the following minimum requirements:

  • Working title
  • The research problem
  • Aim of the research
  • Research question
  • Theories and concepts informing the research
  • Research methodology and design used
  •  Key theoretical and empirical findings  

The abstract should be 800 words in length and should be sent to info@trustafrica.org  or moyo@trustafrica.org
Selection of abstracts will follow ISTR’s process of blind review.

CFC to offer Fall 2009 Internship in Ottawa, Canada

As the membership association for Canada’s network of 165 community foundations, Community Foundations of Canada (CFC) is one of the largest supporters of Canadian communities, providing $169 million in support of local priorities and organizations in 2008.

The internship program at the Ottawa office of CFC aims to strengthen the work of community foundations in Canada and prepare internship participants to play a leadership role in community and non-profit (NGO) institutions at regional, national, and global levels.  Involvement in this internship will also provide opportunities for networking with community foundations leaders, foundation researchers, and practitioners at all levels of community philanthropy.  The internship participant will be highly engaged at various levels of CFC’s work, including  community foundation leadership initiatives, current issues in community philanthropy, international networking among community foundations, and research in endowment building and investment alternatives.  The internship participant will be involved with staff members who specialize in marketing, strategic planning, programming, administration, and research.

 

Candidate Eligibility – At the time of application, applicants must:

  • Be enrolled in or graduated from a 4-year university level program
  • Demonstrate excellence in writing and speaking skills
  • Have substantial community service or experience in the non-profit sector
  • Advanced multi-language skills and research experience are an advantage

Program Dates:
Application deadline:  September 25, 2009
Internship program – October 5, 2009 – December 11, 2009

2.      A Writing Sample (2-4 pages)
3.      Two letters of personal or professional reference

  • Full names
  • Degrees acquired and/or are in progress (degree, date, institution)
  • Additional courses taken
  • Employment history

Peter HeroOnline giving represents one of most exciting developments in philanthropy today. In this presentation at the Online Giving Marketplaces Conference hosted by the Stanford Center for Social Innovation’s magazine, the Stanford Social Innovation Review, Peter Hero, who has grown and scaled online markets, talks about opportunities and challenges in this arena. He considers how philanthropy is changing globally, and the implications of such developments for online giving. He also addresses what’s still missing from online giving in its current form. Finally, he reflects on the globalization of community foundations that are offering opportunities for online giving to be more effective, sustainable, and higher impact in helping build cultures of civic engagement around the world.

Scholarships available for the Council on Foundations’ Fall Conference for Community Foundations!

Council on Foundations This scholarship fund created by the Community Foundations Leadership Team with the generous support of the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation will provide support for non-U.S. Community Foundation leaders who need financial assistance to attend the 2009 Fall Conference for Community Foundations in San Antonio, Texas from October 5-7, 2009.   Additional support may be considered for community foundations also attending the WINGS-CF Peer Learning Event in San Antonio on October 8-9, 2009.

Reporting on Canada’s community foundations

Community Foundations of Canada has published its report on work in 2008, and it is available online. As well as brief accounts of its programs and events, it highlights key stories from community foundations such as environmental work, youth philanthropy and inspiring donors.

It also features:

  • details about their new logo and vision
  • an update on the national Vital Signs program
  • examples of how Canadian community foundations are responding to the downturn
